# A Larger Trunk on a Lamborghini

When Steve Jobs unveiled the iPhone in 2007, one of the loudest pieces of customer feedback was about the missing keyboard.

People were used to BlackBerry - two thumbs, physical keys, a tactile experience they'd built their entire mobile workflow around.

The request seemed completely reasonable from where they were sitting: just add a keyboard option and everyone will be happy.

You know what Jobs did with that feedback? Nothing.

That original design principle has held through every iPhone iteration since. Somehow the world survived.

I think about this constantly in product work, because the pressure to respond to every piece of customer feedback as though it's a directive is real and relentless.

Customers are your most important signal - I believe that genuinely.

But not every complaint is a problem worth solving, and not every feature request points toward something better.

Sometimes feedback is legitimate insight into where the product is falling short. And sometimes it's just resistance to change dressed up as a product requirement - where what the customer is really asking for is a way to keep doing things the way they've always done them.

The hardest part of product leadership is developing the judgment to know which feedback deserves action and which feedback, if you act on it, will pull you straight backwards.

Someone will always ask for a larger trunk on a Lamborghini. Your job is to know when to say no.
